2016 Row-by-Row Hop ~ Home Sweet Home!

The mega Row-by-Row hop has just begun! As you travel this summer, stop in at participating shops (there are over 3000 in the US and Canada!) to pick up their unique, free pattern for a 9" x 36" quilt design showcasing the theme of Home Sweet Home. Our design for 2016 is inspired by the friendly, vibrant, colorful (and vertical!) neighborhoods of Pittsburgh. Of course, we have included the famous steps - don't worry - we'll show you an easy, efficient way to piece them. You can pretend you're standing on Carson looking up at the South Side Slopes as you stitch!
Once you've gathered your patterns, consider stitching a quilt using at least eight of this year's row designs. If you are the first sewist back to a shop, with a completed quilt (quilted, bound and labeled) you will win a stack of 25 fat quarters. If that shops row is in your piece, you win an additional prize. At Quilters Corner that is a stack of 28 fat quarters and a $28.00 gift certificate (because this is our 28th year). One stack is an array of Moda Grunge, the other is all Tula Pink - you need to stitch like the wind to snag them! You have the entire summer to gather patterns, and kits if you would like - enjoy the ride!

This week we welcome Mary Elizabeth Kinch to Quilters Corner. Mary Elizabeth is an author, fabric designer and teacher - the perfect combination. She will offer a lecture at 7:00 on Friday evening (6/24/16). "Random Acts of Quilting" shares great quilting ideas and lessons learned (some of them the hard way), and goes into some of the infamous quilting rules that need to be broken. Everything from the impact of borders and binding, to quilt industry secrets will sneak into the presentation. And of course, Mary Elizabeth is bringing lots of quilts to show. There is still time for you to register ~ lecture fee $12.00 (includes a yard of Modern Country fabric designed by Mary Elizabeth!)

Mary Elizabeth will also be teaching on Saturday and Sunday. Find details about "Letting Go As You Go With the Flow" and "Small Quilts, Small Pieces" on the back page of our current class schedule, or give the shop a call for details (including how you can get a special gift from the shop when you attend the class).

Market Party ~ Saturday June 25th
Join us on Saturday at 10:00am for a lecture (pre-registration required) showcasing the wonderful things we saw at spring Quilt Market. Then take a look around the shop - we have new fabrics, books, patterns and samples wedged into every corner! The market was colorful and inspiring - we hope you find the shop the same! Be sure to bring your QC date book for a little treat on Saturday!

QC Batik Blast ~ July 2nd - 9th
Huge boxes of batik fabric have arrived over the past several weeks (the newest are piled in the corner unopened at the moment - as soon as I finish this letter I get to slit the tape!). The glorious fabrics have arrived just in time for our July "blast". The elegant, handmade, vivid pieces are amazing additions to projects. During the event we will share new batik samples and demonstrate foundation piecing. Batik works very well for the  technique - the refined fabrics are stable enough to be cut into the tiny pieces some of the patterns showcase. If you have a QC date book be sure to check the July page!

One of our friends is working hard to be certain students in one of the poorest school districts in the country have the supplies they need to begin the next school year. We are supporting her with a project we call "Last Day, First Day". As your students (children, grandchildren, nieces...) finish the school year, we ask that you consider those in an area with virtually no resources. You can help the students by selecting a few items that can be put into backpacks - the goal is a backpack for every child! (maybe have your children help give suggestions for things to gather?). Renee is hoping to include everything from pencils and paper to socks - with your help that is possible. You may drop items in the basket on the small school bench next to our front door when you visit the shop. Can you imagine the difference you will make in the first school day of the coming school year?!

I know I should stop writing, but I can't help including just one of the new fabric lines that has arrived. My yearly request to companies to ship our holiday fabric in July has once again been "misunderstood". I think you'll be excited to see the new Halloween and Christmas pieces that have already snuck in. Town Square, by Holly Taylor for Moda, is really marvelous. Rich reds, greens and blues are found in the small prints, and showcased in the snowy scenic design. Combine the prints with Doug Leko's book of the same name and you have the makings for some stunning winter accent pieces. Be sure to see the runners we have already constructed with his directions and our favorite prints.
Fabric: $10.99 per yard, Jelly Rolls $38.99, Charm packs $9.99, Town Square book $21.00
